Folklore, traditional costumes, music, crafts, customs, and the people who proudly carry them on as part of their daily lives. Discover the tradition of mountain shepherding and traditional sheep farming, admire hand-sewn costumes and vibrant folklore, and explore the glassmaking heritage that has been passed down here from generation to generation.

For centuries, people in the Považie region have gathered in the fields, mountains, and craft workshops. The character of the region has been shaped by agriculture, fruit growing, and livestock farming. To this day, you’ll find mountain pastures, grazing lands, and traditions associated with cheese-making and fruit cultivation. In the Bošácka Valley, for example, the famous Bošácka slivovitz has been produced for generations.

Other traditional crafts also had their place here. In Dolná Súča, woven straw hats were made; in Domaniža, the tradition of painting Easter eggs flourished; and in Púchov, cloth-making was significant. Another significant tradition of the region is tinkering, which originated in the poorer foothill areas. Tinkers from Slovakia traveled throughout Europe in search of work and were able to create both practical and artistic objects from ordinary wire. To this day, tinkering remains one of the most famous Slovak crafts.

Považie is also home to blueprinting, a traditional textile decoration technique listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. In the village of Záriečie near Púchov, the Trnkovec family workshop is still in operation, keeping this unique craft alive for several generations.

Folklore

The unique atmosphere of the region is also shaped by the scattered hamlets and farmsteads dotted across the slopes of the White Carpathians and the Javorníky Mountains. Traditional log cabins, farmsteads, and preserved elements of folk architecture serve as reminders of a way of life that has been closely intertwined with nature for centuries.

The cultural heritage of Považie also includes songs, dances, and folk customs. In the past, dances such as the sellácka, vyhadzovaná, ukľakovaná, and na kúby were typical of the region. Many of them were performed at weddings, harvest festivals, or during major holidays. The music was accompanied not only by string ensembles but also by shepherd’s instruments such as horns, fujaras, and trombitas. Later, the heligonka gained great popularity and became an indispensable part of many folklore events.

Today, the traditions of the Považie region come to life during folklore events, fairs, and local festivals. They are a living part of the region and shape its unique character, which you can experience throughout the year.
