The ‘Glass Dream’ Glass-Making Open-Air Museum in Valaská Belá

In the heart of the Strážovské vrchy hills, you will find a place where one of the most beautiful traditional crafts is still practised today – the handcrafting of glass. The ‘Sklený sen’ (Glass Dream) glassmaking open-air museum in Valaská Belá offers a unique insight into the world of master glassmakers, who transform molten glass into original works of art right before visitors’ eyes. It is the only place of its kind in Slovakia where you can experience the authentic production of cast and blown glass.

A glassmaking tradition dating back almost 300 years

Glassmaking is an integral part of Valaská Belá’s history. Its roots date back to 1747, when a glassworks was established in the nearby settlement of Gápel. Local glassmakers were renowned for their skill throughout the former Kingdom of Hungary, and their craft flourished in the region for centuries. Today, this tradition is carried on by master glassmaker Peter Dolinaj, who founded the ‘Sklený sen’ open-air museum in 2007 with the aim of preserving and showcasing the beauty of traditional glassmaking to visitors.

How glass is made

During the tour, you’ll see the entire production process – from molten glass to the finished product. You’ll learn what glass is made of, how it is melted, and what tools glassmakers use to shape it. The master will demonstrate glassblowing using a glassblower’s pipe, as well as shaping, cutting, drawing and decorating hot glass. The exhibition also features historic wooden moulds, original glassmaking tools and products from the glassworks in Valaská Belá and Gápl dating from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

An experience for the whole family

A visit to the open-air museum is ideal for families, schools, organised groups and individual visitors alike. The tour lasts approximately one hour, and at the end you can purchase original, hand-made glassware directly from local glassmakers. Live demonstrations of glassmaking take place only on days when the glass furnace is lit, so it is necessary to book your visit in advance.
