Hiking trip to Vápeč Hill

At 956 metres above sea level, Vápeč Hill is one of the most iconic peaks in the Strážovské vrchy Mountains. Located near the town of Ilava, it is situated approximately 9 kilometres from the town centre and close to the village of Horná Poruba.

Thanks to its distinctive shape, steep limestone cliffs and stunning vistas, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Považie region.

Its rocky summit and character are reminiscent of the famous Veľký Rozsutec peak in the Malá Fatra Mountains. Vápeč is also part of a nature reserve, established in 1993 to protect rare limestone habitats and diverse flora and fauna. The reserve covers an area of over 75 hectares and boasts unique natural scenery well worth exploring.

The route from Horná Poruba

One of the most popular and accessible routes to the summit starts in the village of Horná Poruba.

Time: approx. 1 hour 40 minutes
Ascent: approx. 540 metres

The route starts at the top end of Horná Poruba village, where there is a car park. Initially, the path leads through meadows and along the edge of the forest before joining the marked tourist trail. After entering the forest, the path gradually ascends through pleasant wooded surroundings.

During the ascent, there is an opportunity to pass by a spring flowing directly from the rock or to rest on benches. As you near the end of the route, the landscape changes – the forest gradually gives way to rocks, and you are rewarded with the first views of the surrounding area.

Points of interest along the way:

Just below the summit of Vápeč, there is a small cave that is easily accessible and a popular stop, especially for children. The final part of the ascent takes you beneath rocky cliffs and across the Palúch saddle. In this section, the trail narrows and runs along a rocky ledge, so extra caution is required, particularly when descending.

As there are no chains or ladders along the route, the climb is only suitable for hikers with sure footing and appropriate hiking boots.

Views from the summit

The summit of Vápeč offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can see the Vršatské bralá rock formations, Veľký Manín Hill and the more distant ridges of the Súľovské vrchy, for example. The summit itself is marked by a cross and a logbook in which you can sign your name

Practical information:

• Parking: There is a public car park above the municipal office in the village of Horná Poruba.
• Public transport: You can reach Horná Poruba by bus from Ilava. Get off at the Horná Poruba – Obecný úrad stop.
• Recommendation for hikers: Make sure you pack sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water and a light snack. Although the trail is relatively short, it becomes steeper towards the end and the rocky terrain requires extra caution.

The hike to Vápeč is an ideal choice for families with children who already have some basic hiking experience. The route is short enough for a pleasant half-day trip, offering forest trails, rocky viewpoints and the chance to explore the cave below the summit.
