Butkov Hill – pilgrimage site

The pilgrimage site of Butkov is one of the youngest in Slovakia, yet its atmosphere and location make it truly exceptional. Situated on the summit of Butkov Hill (765 m above sea level) on the edge of the Strážovské Vrchy mountains, it offers a spiritual experience as well as beautiful views of the surrounding area.

Although the site was only recently created, its story is powerful. It was inspired by a visit from Father Elias Vella, a Franciscan minorite, in 2012, after which the gradual transformation of the quarry summit into a space for peace and prayer began. Just a year later, a 12-metre cross was erected here, followed by chapels, stations of the cross and an access road through the forest.

Today, Butkov is a place where the silence of nature meets spirituality.

Throughout the year, various pilgrimages and events take place here, the most significant of which is the annual Divine Mercy national pilgrimage held on the third Sunday in May.

How to get here

The site is open all year round and is ideal for a relaxing day out, a walk or some quiet reflection.
