The Jelenec Lookout Tower

The Jelenec Lookout Tower is a less traditional vantage point, offering an adventurous experience rather than a classic tourist one. Located on the summit of Jelenec (925 metres above sea level) in the White Carpathians, it is a popular destination for thrill-seekers.

The peak’s most striking feature is a former military tower — a remnant of a base from the socialist era — which now serves as an unofficial observation tower. It is precisely this rugged character that makes the tower interesting for anyone looking for something unconventional. The tower is approximately 40 metres tall, and climbing ladders between the individual platforms is required to reach the top. The second-to-last platform is open to the public, and movement on and around the tower is at your own risk. While the climb does have a slightly adrenaline-pumping feel to it, it is manageable with caution.

You’ll be rewarded with exceptional views of the surrounding area, including Veľká Javorina, the Myjava Hills, the Čachtice Carpathians, the Lieskovská Valley, Květná, Strání, Nová Hora and Veľký Lopeník. The easiest route starts from Veľká Javorina and takes about 20 minutes to complete, following a marked forest trail. This short hike can easily be combined with a visit to the summit and chalet Holuby chata.
