The Piarist Church of St Francis Xavier
The Piarist Church of St Francis Xavier, located on Mierovo Square in Trenčín, was originally a Jesuit church and is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque monuments in Slovakia.
A Baroque gem in Trenčín
The defining feature of the Piarist Church is a fascinating optical illusion: a dome above the nave that does not actually exist yet looks so realistic that it appears real to the eye.
Built in the mid-17th century by Italian architects Pietro and Gothard Spazzi, the church was inspired by the famous Roman church of Il Gesù. Featuring a single nave, side chapels and gallery oratories, the structure became a model for many Jesuit churches in Central Europe. It was consecrated in 1657, and St Francis Xavier — patron of missions and the first saint to whom a church in Slovakia was dedicated — became its patron.
Admire the interior!
The interior of the church is an artistic gem. The frescoes above the presbytery and choir depict St Francis as a missionary, preacher and heavenly patron, surrounded by angels. The frescoes’ symbolism reflects his lifelong mission: for instance, the figures representing the four continents symbolise the spread of the faith throughout the world. Monumental altar paintings and rich sculptural decorations complement this exceptional atmosphere.
