Trenčín City Tower

Pass through its arch and you will find yourself in the heart of Trenčín. The City Tower is the natural gateway to Mierové Square and has welcomed visitors to the historic centre of the city for centuries.

Once known as the Lower Gate, it was part of the city’s fortifications. Today, it is one of the most striking landmarks in the city centre and offers a new perspective on Trenčín.

The Gothic tower was built at the beginning of the 15th century as a two-storey gate in the city walls. It was gradually expanded and enlarged until it took on its current form as a six-storey, 32-metre-high tower with an octagonal base. The original city walls were demolished in the 19th century, but the City Tower remained as a silent witness to medieval Trenčín. When you look at its façade, you will notice the Latin inscription Nisi Dominus custodierit civitatem, frustra vigilat qui custodit eam – the medieval motto of the city, which translates as: ‘If the Lord does not protect the city, the watchman watches in vain.’

The views from the top are well worth the climb. From the circular observation deck, you can see Peace Square, Trenčín Castle, the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the Piarist Church and the Jewish synagogue. Looking down, you can see the historic balconies of the houses, the rooftops of the old town and the bustling city centre from a different perspective.

The City Tower also serves as a small gallery, with its interior spaces used to exhibit the work of various artists, so a visit combines history, views and culture.

The first observation deck can be accessed by elevator from Sládkovičova Street, enabling visitors with limited mobility to enjoy the view too. Stairs lead to the upper floors, and the panoramic city views from up there are definitely worth the climb.
