Mierové Square in Trenčín

Mierové Square is the heart of Trenčín. Its shape and character have evolved over the centuries along the old trade route below the castle. Merchants, artisans and pilgrims once passed through here, and today the square is a vibrant hub of city life, with its cafés and galleries offering a tranquil reminder of the past.

The square is a municipal historic preservation zone, and its most striking feature is the Baroque plague column erected in 1712 to commemorate the overcoming of an epidemic.

Dare to step into the city’s story!

In the Middle Ages, the Lower Gate was one of the main entrances to the fortified city. Today, it is preserved as part of the city walls and provides a natural starting point for a walk through the historic centre. Nearby stands the Executioner’s House, one of the few surviving buildings associated with the city executioner, who was active in Trenčín until the 18^(th) century. It serves as a reminder of lesser-known yet important chapters in the city’s history.

The square’s most iconic landmark is the Baroque Piarist Church of St Francis Xavier, which was built by the Jesuits in the early 18^(th) century. Its interior is adorned with typical Baroque features, and the church continues to serve its original purpose. The Parish Stairs lead from the square, connecting the city centre with the higher-lying historic district.

At the top stands the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the oldest religious buildings in Trenčín, with the first written mention dating back to the 14th century. Climbing up to it reveals Trenčín in a whole new light.
