Považie Castle Trail
Dare to conquer all 7 castles!
Back in the days when the Váh River shaped trade routes and the borders of noble estates, mighty guard castles rose on hilltops along both sides of the river. Today, they are known as the Považie Castle Route, connecting seven castles across the Považie region: Trenčín Castle, Beckov Castle, Lednica Castle, Uhrovec Castle, Tematín Castle, Čachtice Castle, and Považský Castle.
The oldest among them are Trenčín Castle and Beckov Castle. The remaining castles were built after 1242, when the Mongols invaded the region. The king realized that stone fortresses built on cliffs had successfully resisted their attacks. These castles guarded the trade route through Považie and the northwestern border of the Kingdom of Hungary near the Czech lands. Thanks to the many castle ruins scattered across the region, Považie was considered one of the most picturesque parts of the monarchy in the 19th century.
The castles were strategically positioned so they could be reached within about an hour on horseback from one another. The entire Váh Valley was protected by this network of fortresses, with only one vulnerable section remaining. That is where the Romanesque church in Haluzice Church was built, surrounded by stone fortifications with towers and loopholes.
Castles full of stories
The Považie Castle Route comes alive throughout the summer season. Visitors can enjoy historical battles, demonstrations of medieval cuisine, themed tours, and atmospheric night-time experiences.
Many events are now organized in cooperation between the castles, creating unique experiences across the entire region. Examples include the events The Bloody Countess and the Turk Slayer and The Scholar’s Journey, which connect Beckov Castle and Čachtice Castle.
Every year, the castles of the Považie Castle Route also take part in the nationwide event Night of Castles and Ruins, held regularly in August. The event offers visitors the unique atmosphere of evening tours, cultural performances, and a rich accompanying programme.
Another popular event is the annual running race From Castle to Castle, held every October and leading from Beckov Castle to Trenčín Castle.
Follow the castles on foot or by bike
Beyond history, the Považie Castle Route also offers active relaxation. Expect hikes with breathtaking views as well as easy walks through the natural landscapes of the White Carpathians and Strážov Mountains.
Along the Váh River runs the Váh Cycle Route, offering a safe and comfortable cycling experience. With just a few short detours, you can head directly to the individual castles. Thanks to this, the Považie Castle Route becomes the perfect combination of history, hiking, and cycling adventures.
Castle EXPedition
Just like last year, this year the castles of Považie will once again be connected through a hiking and discovery game designed for both young and grown-up explorers, as well as fans of history, games, and adventures.
The goal of the expedition is to conquer all seven castles and collect stamps in a castle passport. Every completed challenge brings not only a memorable adventure, but also the opportunity to earn special equipment for the passport and progress through different knightly ranks based on the number of completed challenges.
More castles = higher level.
In autumn, successful adventurers will be ceremonially knighted as true knights at Trenčín Castle.
More information coming soon.
