Haluzice – Church of St George
Dare to find a place where time stands still
You don’t have to travel far from Trenčín to discover a place where history and nature come together in a truly remarkable way. Hidden in the Bošáca Valley at the foot of the White Carpathians lies the small village of Haluzice – home to one of the region’s most atmospheric sites: the Romanesque Church of St George. Although only its outer walls, cemetery, entrance tower, and fragments of fortifications have been preserved, the site retains a unique and almost timeless character.
Perched on a hill above the village, the church stands as a silent guardian of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of the Váh Valley, the castles of Beckov and Trenčín, and the rolling hills of the White Carpathians. Its location once played a vital strategic role – while the valley was protected by a network of castles, this section remained exposed. For this reason, the church was fortified with stone walls, towers, and embrasures, serving as a refuge for local inhabitants in times of danger.

History carved in stone
The Romanesque church was built in the early 13th century, with the first written mention dating back to 1299. At that time, it was captured by the royal army, marking a loss of territory for Matúš Čák of Trenčín. Over the centuries, the original structure was gradually adapted in the Gothic and later Renaissance styles – the nave was extended, larger south-facing windows were added, and a new western entrance was created.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the church also served Protestant communities before returning to Catholic use after 1708. However, due to its deteriorating condition, services were discontinued in 1810, and the building slowly fell into ruin. Its preservation began in 1968, when the remaining walls were stabilised. Since 2013, ongoing restoration and archaeological research have been carried out by volunteers from the Historical-Astronomical Society. Today, the site occasionally hosts masses, early music concerts, and even weddings, bringing life back to this historic place.
Only one original artefact has survived: a rare late Gothic statue of the Madonna from the late 15th century, now housed in the parish church in Beckov.
Where history meets nature
Just a short walk north of the church, the landscape drops dramatically into the Haluzice Gorge – a striking natural formation that continues to evolve and slowly encroach upon the hill. A visit to Haluzice is best combined with a walk along the educational trail through the gorge, whose dense, lush vegetation creates an almost tropical atmosphere. For those wishing to explore further, a short hike leads to the nearby Hájnica lookout tower, offering even wider views of the Bošácka Valley and the surrounding White Carpathians.
