Marián Imriška: A Chapter of Love at Čachtice Castle

The Love Story of František Nádasdy and Erzsébet Báthory

February is the month of love, romance, and affection, celebrated all around the world. On this occasion, let us travel back in time for a moment, more than four centuries into the past, and look at one of the most fascinating couples in our history: František Nádasdy and Erzsébet Báthory.

Their lives were bound together by a strong connection, passion, and long periods of separation, since František spent most of his life on battlefields. If their love story were narrated by the legendary Lady Whistledown from the series Bridgerton, it might sound something like this:

Lady Whistledown’s Notes

My dearest readers,

From the quiet lands of our beloved Upper Hungarian Crown, whispers have reached me so scandalous that even the grandest Viennese ballroom would blush. It seems that the estate of Čachtice Castle has once again become a place where not only vineyards ripen beneath the moonlight, but passions as well.

His Grace František Nádasdy, hero of countless battles against the Turks, has reportedly returned from military campaigns with a scarred face but an even braver heart. It is said that each time he looks into a mirror, he smiles, as if the scar reminds him not of wounded honor, but of victory over death and his love for his wife.

And what of his noble spouse, Countess Erzsébet Báthory?

Ah, my dear readers, they say that in her eyes reflects more than love alone. Some whisper of a hunger for beauty so eternal that eternity itself must fear it. Some claim her beauty comes from her devotion to her husband, while others murmur about darker ways in which she preserved it.

Whether these are merely superstitions or simply whispers carried by the wind through the walls of Čachtice Castle, I shall leave to your judgment.

Always faithfully yours,

Lady Whistledown

A Love That Survived Wars and Time

That is perhaps how romantics would describe it, but reality was somewhat harsher. Erzsébet Báthory became engaged at the age of eleven, and her future husband was František Nádasdy, then a twenty-year-old nobleman and military commander.

Their wedding took place in Vranov nad Topľou in 1575 and was magnificent. The celebration lasted seven days and welcomed approximately 4,500 guests. Imagine the amount of food and wine. Even a royal chronicler would have written about such a feast. The union of these two noble families created a powerful bond that lasted until 1604, when František suddenly died.

When Love Was Kept Alive Through Letters

František Nádasdy, known as the “Black Beg,” spent much of his time fighting against the Turks on the battlefield. Despite their frequent separation, their relationship endured, largely through letters.

Their correspondence is now considered a treasure by historians.

The surviving letters reveal that their relationship was built not only on respect but also on genuine affection. They wrote to each other about everyday worries, their children, and their longing to reunite.

What is perhaps most surprising is that despite these long separations, the countess gave birth to five children. It is proof that even in difficult times, there were moments when their paths crossed beyond paper and ink.

A Valentine from the Past

The love of František Nádasdy and Erzsébet Báthory was complicated. Perhaps it was not ideal by today’s standards, but it survived wars, intrigue, and time itself.

And although the name of Erzsébet Báthory is forever connected with dark legends, it cannot be denied that she was a woman who loved, wanted to be loved, and left a permanent mark on history.

Perhaps even today, among the ruins of Čachtice Castle, their story still echoes in the whisper of the wind, understood only by those who believe that love never truly dies.
