In 2026, the Slovak National Museum will play an active role in the European Capital of Culture programme in Trenčín through a joint project with the local museum. Following its successful debut in Bratislava, the exhibition ‘The Romans and Slovakia’ will come to Trenčín in a unique, locally adapted form. From 6 May 2026, it will be open to the public at Trenčín Castle.
This version of the exhibition has been specially prepared for Trenčín and highlights the city’s exceptional status during the Roman era, particularly the famous Roman inscription on the castle rock dating from 179 AD — a unique epigraphic monument of European significance. Trenčín was once the meeting point of the Roman world and the Barbarians, giving this city a unique place in the history of Central Europe.
The exhibition presents the history of the territory of present-day Slovakia from the 1st to the 4th century, when it lay on the border of the Roman Empire, serving as a space for trade, military campaigns, cultural encounters and diplomatic negotiations. Visitors will see original archaeological finds ranging from military equipment and everyday objects to extraordinary discoveries from princely tombs, supplemented by the latest findings from archaeological and historical research.
The exhibition’s grand opening will take place on 5 May 2026 at 17:00 in the barracks building at Trenčín Castle. The exhibition, ‘The Romans and Slovakia’, will be open to the public from 6 May 2026. More information can be found here.
