The 16th century was a period of great change in Central Europe. The Battle of Mohács, which took place on August 29, 1526, is one of the most pivotal military engagements, the consequences of which were felt throughout Central Europe. In its political consequences, it marked the end of an entire developmental phase of the Kingdom of Hungary. In the central part of the Danube Basin, the Ottoman Empire became the hegemonic power for over 150 years, while the Hungarian kings of the Habsburg dynasty controlled only the westernmost and northern parts of the former Kingdom of Hungary.
