The Trenčín Architecture Centre (CAT) at the Miloš Alexander Bazovský Gallery in Trenčín is presenting an exhibition entitled ‘Monument Protection and Modern Architecture in the Trenčín Region: Current Status and Challenges’, addressing one of the most sensitive topics in contemporary architecture: the protection of 20^(th)-century architectural heritage.
Exhibition architecture: Marek Badinský, Lucia Tóthová
Curators: Alexandra Mutala and Radka Nedomová.
‘The starting point for the exhibition is the question of what it means in practice to be a monument. The law on the protection of monuments defines monument value as the sum of historical, social, urban and architectural values, but inclusion on the list does not guarantee adequate conditions or social recognition for a work,” says Alexandra Mutala, one of the exhibition’s curators.
The exhibition highlights the fact that modern architecture has long been overlooked in monument protection and is often associated with the ideological baggage of the former regime. Consequently, many valuable buildings are disappearing from public spaces without any broader discussion of their quality and significance. At the same time, the exhibition presents interpretations of texts that will be published in the inaugural issue of the Trenčín Architecture Centre journal. These will offer comprehensive insights from experts in Slovakia and the Czech Republic on the protection of 20^(th)-century architectural heritage in the Trenčín region, covering topics such as the legal framework for protection, historical origins, and examples of interwar architecture, brutalism, department stores, housing estates, and urban complexes such as Baťovany and the Children’s Town complex in Trenčín.
